In Pursuit of My Goal

My name is Mr Hugh. I’m a recent graduate of Oxford University, where I took my Master’s degree, and before that I was a student at University College London. I am a student of English Literature, and I am particularly interested in a kind of literature called Romanticism. This is mainly poetry from the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain. However, I’m interested in all areas of literature, and am also passionate about history. It is my hope that one day I will become a professional academic and teach literature at universities. At the moment I am applying for PhD programs so that I can pursue this goal. I love academia and have relished my time at both Oxford and UCL. The chance to experience literature and history is something I particularly enjoy, and I love sharing this passion with my students.

I have been teaching students for several years now, often students in China via Zoom. This is something I enjoy greatly – it excites me to know that I can share my interests with people on the other side of the world. The students I teach always impress me with their willingness to learn and their interest in English as a language and as a culture. The students I teach for Alicorn are invariably polite and hard-working, as well as being fun, and it is a real pleasure to teach them.

My teaching philosophy springs from my own experience. I believe that the best way to learn is to enjoy what you are learning. If you can make something fun, things fall into place. I always try to connect with my students on a personal level – jokes, games, telling funny stories all allow us to get into the right frame of mind for constructive learning. Creating a relaxed atmosphere in class is something that works especially well for one on one tutoring, because I find the student is then more open in sharing with me what they want to learn. Young pupils respond especially well to this kind of environment, but it also works for teenagers.

Teaching is something that brings me genuine satisfaction and allows me to share my passions with young people. I also love the chance to meet people from around the world. As such, it is more than just a job to me, and something I look forward to doing more in the future.
